STORY: "Charles Boney testifies in David Camm murder trial that he carried guns in backpack," by reporter Grace Schneider, published by the Courier-Journal on September 10, 2013.

GIST: "Jurors in David Camm’s triple-murder trial asked Charles Boney before he left the witness stand Tuesday morning what type of guns he bought and sold near the time of the killings. One asked why he didn’t call police to report the slayings. Another wanted to know why Boney visited the New Albany cemetery where Kim, Brad and Jill Camm were buried. The written questions submitted by the jury came after Boney, 44, had been grilled extensively by defense lawyer Richard Kammen about the evolving nature of his statements and evidence that the defense insists shows he was far more involved in the murders than he has admitted. Camm, 49, is accused of fatally shooting his wife Kim and the couple’s two children in the garage of the family’s Georgetown home Sept. 28, 2000. Boney, who is serving a 225-year sentence in state prison for the murders, testified Monday that he was outside the garage when the shots were fired by Camm, a former state trooper. He also testified that he went to the Camm residence to sell a second handgun to Camm — only to find himself outside listening as the shootings take place. Before he was escorted out of the courtroom in handcuffs, leg shackles and a tan prison-issues jumpsuit, Boney told jurors that he carried .45- and .38-caliber guns and 5-shot revolvers in a backpack, from which he would buy and sell weapons after he was released from prison in June 2000. Boney said in more responses that he delivered his weapons loaded. “Why would you deliver a loaded gun?” a juror asked. He always delivered his weapons loaded, Boney said. In response to why he didn’t call police, Boney told jurors that he recognized that any involvement in the killings would get him quickly re-incarcerated. “Instead of thinking about the Renn family ... I was thinking about myself,” Boney said. As to why he drove one day to the cemetery off Charlestown Road in March 2005, Boney said that “in my own way, I wanted to tell them, ‘I’m sorry for not coming forward.’ ”.........On Tuesday, Richard Kammen, Camm’s lead defense lawyer, questioned Boney about fabrications in his statements to police. Boney acknowledged that detectives never insisted in questioning him that he alone had killed Kim Camm, 35, Brad Camm, 7, and Jill Camm, 5. Boney is serving a 225-year prison sentence in the murders but insists he didn’t pull the trigger. Instead, He has testified that he was at the Camm home to sell an “untraceable” gun to David Camm, a former state trooper, and that Camm had tried to fire on him after shooting his family."
