STORY: "Key witness questioned over gun he carried in David Eastman's car," by reporter Elizabeth Byrne, published by ABC News on  February 10, 2014.

GIST:  The man who helped spark the inquiry into David Harold Eastman's murder conviction has faced questions over why he did not tell anyone until 2010 that he had carried a gun in the back of Eastman's car. Eastman is serving a life sentence for the 1989 shooting murder of Australian Federal Police assistant commissioner Colin Winchester. Benjamin Allan Smith made a statement in 2010 suggesting gun shot residue in Eastman's car, which had been used to link him to the crime, may have come from his rabbit shooting gun. Mr Smith had shared a house with Eastman for a few months in the 1980s and they were friends. On Monday, Mr Smith told the inquiry he once borrowed the car with Eastman's permission, but unbeknownst to Eastman, he took a gun and went shooting. He told the inquiry he did not want Eastman to know he had taken the gun because he knew he would not approve. "He's a person in my experience who had a dislike of guns," Mr Smith said. The man who helped spark the inquiry into David Harold Eastman's murder conviction has faced questions over why he did not tell anyone until 2010 that he had carried a gun in the back of Eastman's car......... The inquiry is in its second phase considering ballistics evidence which was used to connect Eastman to the shooting. Irish ballistics expert James Wallace has now finished his evidence to the inquiry, after casting doubt on key material used in the original trial. Dr Wallace has contradicted the original forensic investigator Robert Collins Barnes' reports, saying the evidence shows no silencer was used and the weapon was most likely a sawn off gun."
