"Supreme Court Chief Justice Christopher Hinkson has denied standing to Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter at Ivan Henry’s trial for compensation over his wrongful conviction. The women’s group wanted to argue for the appointment of an amicus curiae — “a friend of the court” — to put Henry’s “factual innocence” on trial. But Chief Justice Hinkson said Friday that issue was irrelevant and the organization did not meet the requirements of a party that should be heard.... Henry was wrongfully convicted of 10 sexual offences against eight women in 1983 and declared a dangerous offender. He served nearly 27 years in prison before he was released and the B.C. Court of Appeal in 2010 declared him acquitted of the charges. “We are disappointed that the court did not decide to appoint an amicus,” said Louisa Russell, a rape crisis worker who spoke for the organization."
