Tempe Train Crash Disaster: Greece: Christos Triantopoulos; Former Deputy Climate Crisis and Civil Protrection (sic) minister who recently resigned his ministerial post protests innocence on allegations that he covered up evidence on the site of the Tempe railway disaster by ordering the filling of the site a couple of days after the Feb. 28, 2 as ekathimerimi reports in a story headed, "Parliament to probe whether ex-minister tampered with site of Tempe rail disaster crash of a passenger and a cargo train, noting that: "With the public widely sharing the suspicions of the relatives of the 57 victims of Greece’s deadliest rail disaster that the government was, at a minimum, less than forthcoming about what transpired that night or, worse, that it deliberately suppressed evidence, and the opposition seeking to make political capital out of the issue, the case has recently exploded in a way that it had not in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, putting the government on the defensive."

PASSAGE OF THE DAY: "Some victims’ relatives decried the procedure as a coverup and claime that all government ministers, including Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, against whom lawsuits have been filed should be investigated, and not just a single official."

STORY: "Parliament to probe whether ex-minister tampered with site of Tempe rail disaster," published by newsroom (ekathimerimi.com), on March 4, 2025.

GIST: "The Greek Parliament decided late Tuesday to set up a preliminary investigation committee that will consider allegations against former Deputy Climate Crisis and Civil Protrection Christos Triantopoulos.

The main opposition socialist PASOK party that tabled the proposal claims Triantopoulos, who resigned his ministerial post Tuesday while protesting his innocence, covered up evidence on the site of the Tempe railway disaster by ordering the filling of the site a couple of days after the Feb. 28, 2023, crash of a passenger and a cargo train. The official accusation is “dereliction of duty.”

The result, 277-12 in favor of setting up the 27-member committee, was a foregone conclusion once the government decided to support the proposal, saying that it, too, favored total transparency. Four MPs voted present, two cast blank ballots and another two spoiled ballots.

With the public widely sharing the suspicions of the relatives of the 57 victims of Greece’s deadliest rail disaster that the government was, at a minimum, less than forthcoming about what transpired that night or, worse, that it deliberately suppressed evidence, and the opposition seeking to make political capital out of the issue, the case has recently exploded in a way that it had not in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, putting the government on the defensive.

 Protests have been escalating and the ones organized on the second anniversary of the disaster were massively attended.

Parliamentary party leaders will debate the issue Wednesday. Also Wednesday, four opposition parties (PASOK, SYRIZA, New Left and Course of Freedom) are expected to table a joint motion of no confidence.

Some victims’ relatives decried the procedure as a coverup and claime that all government ministers, including Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, against whom lawsuits have been filed should be investigated, and not just a single official. They also claimed PASOK, with its “artful” proposal, is part of the coverup."

PUBLISHER'S NOTE:  I am grateful to 'Authory' a valuable service which  creates a portfolio of all of my posts since I fired  my  first post into the cybersphere  on the   Charles Smith Blog    on September 29, 2007, some 17 years ago. Today's post is number 11, 784  Yikes! Yes, this is a compulsion, but it's a healthy one ! One of the best features of 'Authory'  (which I am trying out on the Blog for the first time, is a search engine for the portfolio  which  makes it easier  for  readers to follow the many important cases, issues and developments (and occasional rants)  in the area of flawed  pathology, flawed pathologists, and whatever else might cross my mind  in jurisdictions throughout the world which are at the heart of the Blog. So, dear reader, you can access the portfolio at the following link. Just type the inquiry into the  search box  at the following link,  and hit enter.  (The search box is on the top write side of the page under 'Read more.' Why not try it out, and,  as encouraging  use of this search function  by my readers is rather new to me, any feedback on how it is working would be appreciated at: hlevy15@gmail.com. Cheers!

FINAL WORD:  (Applicable to all of our wrongful conviction cases):  "Whenever there is a wrongful conviction, it exposes errors in our criminal legal system, and we hope that this case — and lessons from it — can prevent future injustices."

Lawyer Radha Natarajan:

Executive Director: New England Innocence Project;

FINAL, FINAL WORD: "Since its inception, the Innocence Project has pushed the criminal legal system to confront and correct the laws and policies that cause and contribute to wrongful convictions.   They never shied away from the hard cases — the ones involving eyewitness identifications, confessions, and bite marks. Instead, in the course of presenting scientific evidence of innocence, they've exposed the unreliability of evidence that was, for centuries, deemed untouchable." So true!
