"Joseph Buffey was in court Thursday for a pre-trial hearing. He is expected back before his trial begins in October. Buffey had pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting an
83-year-old woman in 2001 and withdrew his guilty plea in February 2016
after a ruling by the State Supreme Court of Appeals–waived his right to
trial by jury in favor of a bench trial. Buffey is currently free on
bond before his trial starts October 11. The prosecution issued a motion Thursday to admit
into evidence statements that Buffey made during a deposition in 2013,
when he reconfirmed that he was inside the alleged victim's home but did
not remember committing the crime. The alleged victim's son was also in court
Thursday. He took the witness stand, recalling his mother calling him
the day of the alleged crime. According to him, she said "they raped me,
get over here." DNA evidence had since been used to convict Adam Bowers in the case, who is currently serving a 70 year sentence."
