"It was
another emotional day of
testimony, as witnesses took the stand for the re-trial of a man accused
of killing a three-year-old girl. In 2012, Leo Ackley
was found guilty of child abuse and felony murder in the death of
3-year-old Baylee Stenman, his girlfriend's daughter. He was sentenced
to life in prison. In 2015, the Michigan Supreme Court granted Ackley a
new trial. We heard testimony from several witnesses, including Baylee
Stenman's mother, Erica. The defense says Baylee's death was the result
of an accidental fall, but the prosecution says this was no
accident......... The
doctor who reviewed Baylee Stenman's case says she had been developing
normally but there were changes, when defendant Leo Ackley came along,
implying that Baylee was in a stressful environment. He
says her eating habits changed, she was losing hair, and he says a child
who had not been easy to bruise, was now bruising easily. He says he
saw several highly suspicious bruises, including one on the neck. "You
don't see injuries to either side of your voice box in a pattern like
that accidentally, and I don't know of an activity that you do that
would cause that," he said. The doctor says he was
concerned, looking at the autopsy photos of Baylee's head, saying it
appears she suffered a blow to the head against some kind of edged
surface. "Bleeding in the backs of your eyes, in
association with bleeding around your brain, in a circumstance where
there's no reasonable explanation offered for that is 100% specific for
abuse," the doctor said. Testimony will continue Thursday."
