"Jurors
in the Tonya Lucas arson and murder trial heard testimony Friday about
one of her deceased children who she had admitted to neglecting. Testimony
focused on the condition of one of Lucas' children, 2-year-old Gregory
Cook, and the July 7, 1992, fire that happened on the same day set for
her eviction. The property manager, George Daingerfield, told jurors that he went
to 2424 E. Eager St. to meet with a sheriff's deputy for the scheduled
eviction. The defense asked if rent had been paid on that day,
would the eviction have continued? He said, "No, it would have been
cancelled." When Daingerfield arrived, he learned the house was on fire. Lucas
has denied setting the fire that killed six of her seven children.
Prosecutors are trying to prove she did it to avoid eviction and get
help from the Red Cross to find someplace else to live. Prosecutors
said they also believe Lucas was trying to hide child abuse and neglect
of Gregory, who weighed 10 pounds at his death."
