Junk Science: (Dubious Video evidence): Netflixdocuseries: The Express UK asks: Who is George Powell? Will George Powell be released?

PASSAGE OF THE DAY: A piece of evidence that was used to convict him was a video from inside the store. However, according to Earn the Necklace, a forensic video analyst later said that the man seen in the video is shorter than Powell. Experts from the Texas Forensic Science Commission have determined that the man in the video is between 5’6” and 5’8”, while Powell is 6’3”. This has led the Innocence Project of Texas to call some of the evidence against him “junk science”. There has also been a number of changes in the case since Powell was imprisoned, like a witness against him admitting he lied in his testimony. In 2018, his case was reopened thanks to the efforts of the Innocence Project of Texas."

"PASSAGE TWO OF THE DAY: "On Wednesday, June 26, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled there was prosecutorial misconduct in his trial. This ruling followed several earlier hearings across the last year. In February, according to local news site KCEN: “Bell County Judge John Gauntt found that Powell should be granted a new trial, saying Powell's due process rights were violated.”

STORY: "Who is George Powell? Will George Powell be released?,  by Samuel Spencer, published by The Express on July 5, 2019.

GIST:  "Netflix last week released their latest true crime series in Exhibit A, which tells the true crime tales of people like George Powell and Norma Jean Clark. Exhibit A on Netflix features George Powell in its first episode, a man imprisoned for aggravated robbery based on video evidence who could soon be released. George Powell is soon to have a second trial, meaning he could soon be released.

Who is George Powell? George Robert Powell III is a Texas native who, since June 2008, has been serving a 28-year sentence for aggravated robbery. The robbery he was charged for committing happened earlier that month, when a man in white, also wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap held up a convenience store with a gun, getting away with money and cigarettes. A piece of evidence that was used to convict him was a video from inside the store. In 2018, his case was reopened thanks to the efforts of the Innocence Project of Texas.

Will George Powell be released? "Although we do not yet know if George Powell will be released, he is due to get a new trial. On Wednesday, June 26, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled there was prosecutorial misconduct in his trial. This ruling followed several earlier hearings across the last year. In February, according to local news site KCEN: “Bell County Judge John Gauntt found that Powell should be granted a new trial, saying Powell's due process rights were violated.”
Currently, Powell’s Innocence Project of Texas lawyers are waiting for his bond to be set before a new trial can begin. Speaking to KWTX, Powell praised those who had backed him, saying: “That support has been a pillar to my survival.” He also said: “[The] person that robbed this store is between heights of 5'6" and 5'8". “Somebody out there know who robbed these stores and they need to come forward.” Exhibit A is streaming on Netflix now."
