CASEY ANTHONY: JUDGE ABRUPTLY RECESSES TRIAL; NO EVIDENCE HEARD TODAY (SATURDAY): JURY RETURNS MONDAY; WESH TV;

"Perry returned and announced the recess, saying the break was not related to the issue with the expert.

Perry said the sudden recess was due to a "legal matter" that had come up. The jury hadn't even entered the courtroom for the day.

The loss of another day of testimony likely means another delay in an already five-week trial.

On Friday, the defense estimated it would rest its case on Wednesday or Thursday. Perry hoped to send the jury out for deliberations on Friday or Saturday.

Saturday's delay means that timeline will likely be pushed back, and possibly mean the loss of July 4, a holiday.

A court spokeswoman said that court would not take place on July 4, unless the jury already had the case."

MARK CALENDER NOW: IMPORTANT JOINT NPR, FRONTLINE, PROPUBLICA INVESTIGATION OF CHILD DEATH CASES INVOLVING ABUSE, ASSAULT AND "SHAKEN-BABY SYNDROME." ASKS IF DEATH INVESTIGATORS ARE BEING PROPERLY TRAINED FOR CHILD CASES; FIRST OF THREE SEGMENTS ON "THE CHILD CASES" AIRS ON JUNE 28 AT 9.00 PM:

When a child dies under suspicious circumstances, abuse is often suspected. That's what happened in the case of six-month-old Isis Vas, whose death was deemed "a clear-cut and classic" case of child abuse, sending a man named Ernie Lopez to prison for 60 years. But now a Texas judge has moved to overturn Lopez's conviction, and new questions are being asked about the quality of expert testimony in this and many other similar cases. In this joint investigation with ProPublica and NPR, FRONTLINE correspondent A.C. Thompson unearths more than 20 child death cases in which people were jailed on medical evidence -- involving abuse, assault and "shaken-baby syndrome" -- that was later found unreliable or flat-out wrong. Are death investigators being properly trained for child cases? The Child Cases is the first of three magazine segments airing June 28 at 9 p.m. (check local listings);

"ORLANDO, Fla. -- Without any testimony and little explanation, Judge Belvin Perry recessed the Casey Anthony trial for the day around 9:40 Saturday morning," the WESH TV story published earlier today under the heading, "Judge Abruptly Calls Casey Trial Recess For Day; Day Ends Without Any Testimony; Jury Never Entered Courtroom," begins.

"About an hour earlier, attorneys got in a courtroom spat over the testimony of a defense expert witness,"
the story continues.

"Prosecutor Jeff Ashton again accused the defense of a discovery violation, saying that a defense expert, Dr. Kenneth Furton, did additional research since his deposition.

Ashton said the defense had new presentation material that the prosecution had not seen before.

Several discovery issues have arisen in the past several weeks since the trial began.

"You think this would've grown old by now, but I guess some things never change," Perry said.

Perry said he would review Furton's report and his deposition to see if the expert's opinions had changed.

After the argument, the defense and Anthony left the courtroom with Perry.

Perry returned and announced the recess, saying the break was not related to the issue with the expert.

A court spokeswoman said that court would not take place on July 4, unless the jury already had the case.

Testimony will resume 8:30 a.m. Monday, Perry said.
