"Leo
Ackley was found guilty Thursday of felony murder and first-degree
child abuse in the 2011 death of his former girlfriend's daughter,
Baylee Stenman, 3. A Calhoun County Circuit Court jury of
seven woman and five men deliberated more than 10 hours before reaching
the verdict Thursday afternoon against Ackley, 30. The Battle Creek man was on trial for the second time in the 2011 death of his former girlfriend's daughter, Baylee Stenman, 3. She died from what the Calhoun County Medical Examiner said was blunt-force trauma to her head. Ackley
was convicted and sentenced in 2012 to life in prison without parole in
her death. But the Michigan Supreme Court ordered a new trial for
Ackley after ruling that his trial attorney should have called an expert
to contradict prosecution medical doctors who said the girl died from
an inflicted rather than an accidental injury. The
defense attorney for Ackley, Andrew Rodenhouse, has argued that the
medical science of abusive head trauma is flawed. His expert, Dr.
Ljabasa Dragovic, Oakland County medical examiner, testified at the end
of the defense case that the autopsy on the child was incomplete and did
not prove when or how the child was injured. Calhoun
County Medical Examiner Joyce deJong testified last week that the injury
was severe and the child would have shown immediate symptoms. Rodenhouse
had argued the little girl may have been injured when she fell from a
small trampoline into a plastic kiddie pool five days earlier. Dragovic also questioned the prosecution analysis that bruises on the little girl showed a pattern of abuse before she died."
