Derek Bromley; New South Wales, Australia: (A discredited forensic pathologist Colin Manock case:) Bulletin: Mark your Calendar: This Wednesday, May 17, 2023, the High Court will commence a two day hearing into Derek Bromley's conviction of this Aboriginal who is now serving his 40th year in prison. (Even though he could have been freed years ago if he admitted his guilt - which he has strenuously denied from the outset.)

PUBLISHER'S NOTE: As Legal Scholar Dr. Robert Moles has pointed out:

0: Derek Bromley  had eight of the country's leading experts (including the Crown's own experts) on his earlier appeal to say that the evidence given at his trial was fundamentally misleading;

0: The former Attorney-General said that the forensic pathologist at his trial (Colin Manock) had been disgraced such that convictions could not be based upon his evidence.
0: Manock's own employer gave sworn evidence many years earlier stating that he was not qualified to do autopsies or to give expert evidence in court as did the High Court itself some years later.
In spite of this overwhelming evidence that Derek Bromley's conviction was terribly flawed, Dr. Moles notes that the State's Director of Public Prosecutions has formally submitted to the High Court Justices that they must accept the evidence the discredited pathologist gave at the Bromley trial.
The government's position is manifestly unjust - an abdication of its duty to advise the court of the full extent of Manock's professional and moral ineptitude and the miscarriages of justice he has caused while testifying for the state.
Of course, the High Court justices are already  well aware of the dark, unforgivable  blot  that Manock has left on the state's criminal justice system and the personal, cruel injustice suffered by Derek Bromley  over four decades -  as is the public at large - given the extraordinary amount of coverage it has received over the years in the state and national media.
That's the elephant in the room!
But do they care?
I hope so -  and will be following developments closely.

FINAL WORD: (Applicable to all of our wrongful conviction cases): "Whenever there is a wrongful conviction, it exposes errors in our criminal legal system, and we hope that this case — and lessons from it — can prevent future injustices."

Lawyer Radha Natarajan:

Executive Director: New England Innocence Project;

—————————————————————————————————

FINAL, FINAL WORD: "Since its inception, the Innocence Project has pushed the criminal legal system to confront and correct the laws and policies that cause and contribute to wrongful convictions. They never shied away from the hard cases — the ones involving eyewitness identifications, confessions, and bite marks. Instead, in the course of presenting scientific evidence of innocence, they've exposed the unreliability of evidence that was, for centuries, deemed untouchable." So true!

Christina Swarns: Executive Director: The Innocence Project;

YET ANOTHER FINAL WORD:

David Hammond, one of Broadwater’s attorneys who sought his exoneration, told the Syracuse Post-Standard, “Sprinkle some junk science onto a faulty identification, and it’s the perfect recipe for a wrongful conviction.”
