STORY: "Barri White: An innocent man 'rotting in jail,' by reporter Laura Devlin, published by BBC News on September 4, 2013. (Thanks to the Florida Innocence Project for drawing attention tho this case. HL);
GIST: "At his trial, the jury was told Mr White had strangled Rachel after arguing with her all night. A rare combination of particles was said to prove her body had been in a van driven by Mr White's friend, Keith Hyatt. But in 2005, BBC Rough Justice took up the case and showed the forensic science used to convict them was flawed and that no evidence existed to link them to the killing......... "That changed everything," said Mr White, who watched the programme in his cell.........It still took several years, but Mr White's conviction was quashed at the Court of Appeal in 2007, and he was acquitted at a retrial the following year."

See also: "We proved Barri White and Keith Hyatt were innocent,"by Mark Daly. (Investigations. BBC); "We knocked on hundreds of doors, chased down endless leads and, crucially, commissioned new DNA and forensic tests which would prove that it was impossible for Barri and Keith to have committed this crime. Dr Peter Bull tested the evidence given to the jury at Aylesbury Crown Court The prosecution case depended on forensic expert Kenneth Pye. He confidently told the jury in the first trial that it was likely Rachel's body had been transported in Keith's van. But his assertions were based on a series of scientific assumptions which were revealed by Rough Justice to be not just untested, but completely wrong. Barri White, serving a life sentence for a murder he did not commit, watched the broadcast of the programme from his cell, as did all of his fellow prisoners. As the final credits rolled, the prison erupted in a crescendo of shouts, cheers and pots crashing against bars. But it would be another two-and-a-half painfully slow years before he would set foot outside prison walls."
