Michelle Murphy: Oklahoma: Innocence Project announces her exoneration of the murder of her infant son; Executive Director Maddy deLone says that, "Very young and in shock after her son’s sudden and violent death, Michelle was subjected to hours of interrogation and was coerced into claiming that she’d accidentally killed her own child when she knelt down to pick up a knife after a confrontation with a neighbor. Based on her false confession and an untrue implication by the prosecution that blood found at the scene matched Michelle’s blood type, she was convicted." Recent testing has implicated an unknown male as the real perpetrator. (Must Read. HL);

RELEASE: From Innocence Project Executive Director Maddy deLone - on the exoneration of Innocence Project client Michelle Murphy (Oklahoma)  of the murder of her infant son  "on new DNA evidence and other previously undisclosed evidence pointing to her innocence."

GIST:  Today in Oklahoma, with the consent of the local prosecutor, a Tulsa court exonerated our client Michelle Murphy of the murder of her infant son based on new DNA evidence and other previously undisclosed evidence pointing to her innocence. Recent testing has implicated an unknown male as the real perpetrator, and in the course of representing Michelle, we uncovered other evidence pointing to her innocence that was known at the time of her trial but never disclosed to her defense attorneys. Exactly 20 years ago today someone brutally murdered Michelle’s 15-week-old son while she and her 2 year-old daughter slept. Just 17 at the time, Michelle discovered her son’s body in the apartment of her kitchen when she woke and immediately went to a neighbor to call police, who found no weapon in her apartment and no blood on her clothing. Very young and in shock after her son’s sudden and violent death, Michelle was subjected to hours of interrogation and was coerced into claiming that she’d accidentally killed her own child when she knelt down to pick up a knife after a confrontation with a neighbor. Based on her false confession and an untrue implication by the prosecution that blood found at the scene matched Michelle’s blood type, she was convicted. In April of this year, the court ordered DNA testing of crime scene evidence and additional discovery in the case. The prosecutor moved to overturn Michelle’s conviction on May 30, on the eve of being called to testify regarding what was known about the blood evidence at the time of her trial. At that point Michelle was released, but it wasn’t until today that the charges against her were dismissed and she was fully exonerated."
