STORY:"One of the "Monfils Six" seeks mental health details in suicide theory," by reporter Sarah Thomsen, published by Action Two News on June 10, 2015.
GIST: Action Two News is learning of new attempts to learn more about the
mental health of the man at the center of a high profile Green Bay
murder. It happened more than two decades ago. The so-called Monfils Six — Keith Kutska, Dale Basten, Michael Hirn,
Rey Moore, Michael Piaskowski and Michael Johnson — were convicted and
sentenced to life in prison for the death of Tom Monfils, whose body was
found in a pulp vat in the Green Bay paper mill where he worked in
1992. Piaskowski’s conviction has since been overturned.Kutska, though, is the only other man to receive a hearing, set for
July, where his lawyers plan to argue Monfils wasn’t murdered, but
killed himself. The recently-filed documents give us a glimpse into what to expect at
Kutska’s hearing, supporting his theory that Tom Monfils committed
suicide. Kutska’s attorneys are asking for all non-privileged information
dealing with the mental, emotional, psychological or psychiatric
conditions of not only Tom Monfils, but also his widow, Susan. Kutska’s team also wants any marriage, behavioral or psychological
counseling details, and any claims, information or compensation in any
wrongful death lawsuits. As we’ve reported the last several months, other motions filed by
Kutska’s lawyers with the Minnesota Innocence Project, cite statements
saying Monfils “had a strange fascination with death and drowning” and
that testimony used to convince jurors of murder was “complete fiction.” At trial, prosecutors argued the mill workers formed an angry mob, viciously beat Monfils and threw his body in the pulp vat. The Brown County District Attorney’s Office stands by that, calling it a “sensational and unsupported theory of suicide.” A judge will likely hear the evidence, as well as other witness
testimony, at an evidentiary hearing at the Brown County courthouse
slated to begin July 8th."
